Days of Caring Volunteers Do Something About It! More than 7,000 volunteers used their can-do attitudes and community spirit to reach out to our neighbors during the 2009-10 Days of Caring. They shared their time and talents at 87 locations across Houston to help United Way of Greater Houston’s affiliate agencies spruce up their facilities and improve the lives of their clients.“We don’t just work here, we live here, so it is important that we give back here,” said Anna M. Babin, president and CEO of United Way of Greater Houston. “Days of Caring projects give our donors a first-hand look at how United Way is making a difference and allow them to play an even greater role in our work in the community.” Volunteers participated in a variety of projects, including food deliveries to home-bound seniors, hosting parties and craft sessions for seniors; hosting field days to entertain children; sorting food at local pantries; organizing merchandise at thrift shops, painting and making repairs; mulching flower beds and readying fall gardens for planting. Whether they spent time working outside, painting or interacting with clients, Days of Caring volunteers know that the time they spend giving back makes a difference for our entire community. “Contributing to the local community where we have our operations is one of our core values,” says Neil A. Chapman, president of ExxonMobil Global Services. “We feel it is our responsibility and we are enormously proud that our employees are able to take on this role in the community.” Chapman visited several Days of Caring sites to thank volunteers for their hard work. The numbers speak for themselves. This year, United Way’s Days of Caring included more than 500 projects that benefit 38 United Way partner agencies. Forty-seven companies supported the city-wide effort. Additional Days of Caring projects will be completed in October and November. Thanks to everyone who turned out to make this year’s Days of Caring a huge success. You do something about it, the United Way. View a photo gallery of the 2009 Days of Caring. |
