"After the Storm" Recovery Guide Published by United Way of Greater Houston
Detailed guide provides itemized list of contacts, advice and next steps for region's most vulnerable

HOUSTON (Sept. 19, 2008) – In the wake of a natural disaster, shock, fear, depression – and especially confusion – make it difficult to cope and begin the recovery process.  With the assistance of The United Way of Greater Houston's "After the Storm" guide, residents of Southeast Texas will find a variety of resources and suggestions to help them bounce back after braving the storm.

Available in both print and electronic formats, the United Way's "After the Storm" resource booklet provides useful checklists, helpful tips and a list of agencies and organizations that can help local residents with the rebuilding process.

Examples of the guide's essential information include how to access Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) assistance; plus resources such as the Consumer Credit Counseling Service, which provides assistance in preparing a reasonable budget; and the Better Business Bureau, which provides flood kits and information to prevent consumer fraud.

Houstonians currently can access this free manual in English at www.unitedwayhouston.org and next week across our community through United Way affiliate agencies and other non-profit organizations.  A Spanish version of the booklet will be available next week.

The guide also will appear as a special insert in the Houston Chronicle, Sunday, Sept. 21.
