Thanks to Spectra Energy and its employees for contributing $1,210,800 to United Way of Greater Houston. 2009 marks the company’s sixteenth consecutive million dollar campaign. Results, which include a dollar-for-dollar company match, increased more than 8 percent over last year. The company announced the good news at a Victory Celebration on October 29.

“In times like these, the outpouring of support by our employees clearly demonstrates that we are committed to the communities where we live and work and that we know how to deliver,” said Greg Ebel, president and CEO, Spectra Energy. “I am extremely proud of what we’ve accomplished this year for United Way.”

2009 Campaign Chair Pat Gibson and Co-Chairs Roni Cappadonna and Steve Sobell led a campaign team comprising nearly 30 employees from across the company. Recognizing the challenges many are facing in our community, the team selected “Be the Voice of Hope” as this year’s theme and featured 2-1-1 Texas/United Way HELPLINE as the educational focus during the campaign. Campaign Coordinators Regan Kasman and Lainie Gordon coordinated a variety of fun activities.

Spectra Energy emphasized pledging as the best way to support United Way and provided a variety of activities to promote fun and engage employees during the campaign. Inspired by this year’s theme, seven employee teams took on names such as Voices of Caring, Voices of Opportunity, etc. and participated in a plate painting competition that reflected their various team names. Other employees joined in the “name the lyric” competition. Other activities: CEO Greg Ebel hosted a breakfast for stewardship donors; employees participated in Days of Caring; and new employees learned about United Way during new hire orientation.

We appreciate the leadership of Dorothy Ables, chief administrative officer and 2009 co-chair of the Alexis de Tocqueville Society. With her help, Spectra Energy added eight new members for a total of 16 in 2009.

Anne Neeson, United Way vice president of Donor Relations, was on hand to thank employees for an outstanding effort. “You are angels for our community, helping in so many ways that have extraordinary outcomes. Your incredible generosity assures that United Way will continue to touch one of every two lives in our community.”

In addition to its strong workplace campaign, Spectra Energy is one of United Way's 2009-2010 Caring Champions.

We thank our friends at Spectra Energy for another outstanding campaign. You do something about it the United Way!
