Tom Ryan, 2009-10 United Way Campaign chair and president and CEO of Service Corporation International, thanked Society members for their generosity, noting the tremendous support at the Benefactor and Visionary levels. Ryan also welcomed Penny and Paul Loyd, first-time United Way contributors who generously gave at the Benefactor level.
“The Alexis de Tocqueville Society sets the pace for the overall campaign and is absolutely critical to the work United Way does in the community,” Ryan told guests. “With the dedication of our members, and incentive of the challenge match program, I know we can make the greatest impact.”
“The Visionaries and Benefactors who support the challenge match have paved the way for the Alexis de Tocqueville Society. Thanks to their generosity, the challenge match has leveraged your gift and impacted positive, visible change in Houston,” Ryan said. “I know that our community will be better tomorrow because of United Way.”
Alexis de Tocqueville Society Co-Chair Dorothy Ables shared with guests one of the reasons she gives to United Way, recounting the moving story of a young mother who called the 2-1-1 Texas/United Way HELPLINE before the holidays and found help for her family. “I give to United Way because of the people United Way affects,” Ables said.
Alexis de Tocqueville Society Co-Chair Bobby Tudor announced two upcoming events for members. The Society’s Annual Appreciation Dinner will be held at the Museum of Fine Arts, Houston on March 1. An event honoring major donors who give $25,000 or more (donors may use the match to be recognized at this level) will be held at Rienzi on April 14.
Benefactors in attendance included: Jennifer and Chris Brown; Wendy and Jeff Hines; Nancy and Rich Kinder; Anna McLean and Phoebe and Bobby Tudor. Other reception attendees included: Mickey and Dorothy Ables, Kathy and Marty Goossen, Joe Hafner, Diana Hudson and Lee Kaplan, Terry Koonce, Lynne Liberato, Sheila and Steve Miller, United Way Women’s Initiative Chair Sue Payne, Jim Postl, Amy and Tom Ryan, Ellen and Steve Susman, Dick Weekley, Cyvia and Melvyn Wolff, and Ling and George Yang
