What our members are saying

"United Way understands that each person’s retirement journey is different. Some employers offer robust programs for their retirees, but for many people, it’s hard to find the right opportunities. United Way offers a variety of ways to get involved that could be a great fit as you consider staying active and involved throughout retirement. For me, working with United Way has provided a meaningful framework for both transitioning into retirement and for giving back to the community."

Claire Liu, retired executive
Bank of America and LyondellBasell

"Retirement can come with great anticipation — planning trips, time with family, long overdue projects, and occasionally even some part-time work and consulting. hat was my plan. And I love it, but I realized I still had a deep desire to help our community – and that I had more time and energy to give. United Way keeps a finger on the pulse of community needs, so I can easily “plug in” where I’m needed!"

Steven W. Roll, retired executive

"As an employee at Marathon Oil Company, I always participated in the annual United Way campaign and our Day of Caring. I could see firsthand the positive impact United Way had on individuals and wanted to be more involved. I joined United Way's Women’s Initiative and then the Alexis de Tocqueville Society, eventually serving on both Steering Committees. I have also served on various United Way strategic committees and in the semi-annual Community Investment Process. As a recent retiree, I find it immensely rewarding to volunteer in these programs, not only because they allow me to use skills from my work experience to help others, but also due to the wonderful friendships that I have developed with other volunteers who care about Houston and supporting United Way."

Caroline Fant, retired

"Retirement is an interesting season of life. All of a sudden, you wake up one day....it's not the crack of dawn anymore...but a day filled with sunshine and the opportunity to explore new horizons. United Way of Greater Houston’s Stay United initiative is providing me wonderful options to engage with my peers in many fascinating ways, including community related activities, learning experiences, and much, much more! When United Way plans a community volunteer event or sponsors a new learning activity, it creates an opportunity that takes little to no preparation--other than showing up and having fun!"
