David McClanahan Named Volunteer of the Year By United Way of Greater Houston

HOUSTON, TX (April 27, 2016) – United Way of Greater Houston named David M. McClanahan, retired president and chief executive officer of CenterPoint Energy, Incorporated, as this year’s recipient of the distinguished Robert W. Kneebone Volunteer of the Year Award at its annual meeting on April 26. The Kneebone Award is the highest honor given to a United Way volunteer in recognition of extraordinary leadership and commitment to community service.

“Over the years I’ve seen a very distinguished group of men and women accept this award, and I’m delighted and humbled to now be among them,” said McClanahan. “It’s a very special thing to be recognized by an organization like United Way, who does so much for so many people in our community.”

McClanahan began his volunteer involvement with United Way of Greater Houston in 2006, when he was elected to the United Way board of trustees. Along with his time as chair of the board, McClanahan has served United Way as part of the board governance and nominating committee, the audit committee, the United Way Worldwide task force and the executive compensation committee. He also served as a member of the future focus task force and campaign leadership team.

“McClanahan was elected to United Way’s board of trustees in 2006 and, in the time since, has been involved in nearly every aspect of United Way’s work, including serving as United Way Campaign Chair during the 2015-16 community campaign. CenterPoint Energy’s slogan ‘Always There’ aptly describes David,” said Anna M. Babin, president and CEO of United Way of Greater Houston. “We have been able to achieve so much in the community because of David’s leadership, compassion and fierce commitment to United Way.”

McClanahan has served on the board of directors of the American Gas Association (past chairman), the Edison Electric Institute, the Gulf Coast Regional Blood Center, The Greater Houston Partnership (past chairman), The Center for Houston’s Future, University of Houston Energy Advisory Board and Central Houston (past chairman). He is a past chairman of the boards of the University of St. Thomas, Junior Achievement of Southeast Texas and the Electric Reliability Council of Texas.

McClanahan began his career in 1972 and held a variety of positions before becoming president and chief operating officer of Houston Lighting and Power Company in 1997. In 1999, he became president and chief operating officer of all regulated operations for Reliant Energy and served as vice chairman of Reliant Energy, a position he held until becoming president and chief executive officer of CenterPoint Energy in 2002 when the company was formed.  McClanahan has a bachelor’s degree in mathematics with honors from the University of Texas and a master’s degree in business administration from the University of Houston.  McClanahan is also a certified public accountant.

McClanahan is a native of Victoria, Texas and has two children with his wife Becky, who he has been married to for over 40 years.
