Houston Texans Tackle Duane Brown Teams Up With United Way Of Greater Houston

November 19th event part of citywide initiative to improve academic success for youth

WHAT:

On Tuesday, Nov. 19, more than 700 kids from five Spring Branch ISD and Houston ISD schools will spend the morning getting pumped up about reading with Houston Texans tackle Duane Brown and United Way of Greater Houston. The second annual “Readers Do Something About It” Reading Rally will promote reading through a variety of educational and fun activities for the students such as viewing a mobile planetarium, designing their own book and reading aloud with United Way volunteers. Brown will challenge every student to read 20 books between now and March, 2014. He will also talk about the commitment he has made with the United Way to improve academic success by involving the community in reading, tutoring and mentoring Houston youth. Every child will take home at least 4 books as part of the initiative, recognizing that lack of access to books can hinder a child’s reading progress.

Houston, TX 77054

WHY:

Currently, less than 50% of Houston’s third graders have the reading skills necessary for success in fourth grade and one in four children in Greater Houston will not graduate from high school: staggering statistics that the United Way of Greater Houston and “Team Brown” are focused on changing. Teaming up with the United Way of Greater Houston, Duane Brown is committing his time and his celebrity as a Houston Texans player to help local children achieve academic success and graduate from high school. Brown is part of the national partnership between “Team NFL” and the United Way to recruit volunteer readers, tutors and mentors to improve academic success.
