United Way of Greater Houston Offers Free Tax Preparation: Bay Area families earning $50,000 or less

Bay Area families earning $50,000 or less are eligible for services

HOUSTON (Feb. 21, 2014) – If you are running short on time or money and need to file your taxes, visit Neighborhood Tax Centers for free tax preparation assistance.

The free tax preparation services from the Neighborhood Tax Centers are available through April 15 at the United Way Bay Area Service Center, 1300 Bay Area Blvd. Hours are Monday through Thursday, 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. and Saturday 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. during February and April. In March, the hours are Monday through Thursday, 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. and Saturday 10 a.m. to 1 p.m.

Neighborhood Tax Centers targets hardworking families that earn up to $50,000 a year and individuals who earn up to $30,000 a year. The program is intended to increase financial stability and to allow families to use their extra money for basic needs, their children’s school expenses, or savings for the future.

Through Neighborhood Tax Centers, families avoid paying high fees charged by traditional retail tax preparer services. Neighborhood Tax Centers prepares current year taxes, electronically files tax returns and offers direct deposit of tax refunds at no cost. Clients also have access to United Way SAVE, a matched savings account program that enables them to set aside part or all of their tax refund right away.

Volunteer tax preparers will provide services on a walk-in basis, so no appointment is necessary. Clients can call 2-1-1- Texas/United Way HELPLINE for more information.

The United of Way of Greater Houston invests in the Neighborhood Tax Centers, which is run Neighborhood Centers Inc. There are 15 locations to serve families throughout the Houston area.

Since its inception in 2009, more than 138,000 tax returns have been prepared by Neighborhood Tax Centers, returning a combined $182 million to families and individuals. In 2013, more than 37,000 tax returns were filed, returning more than $48 million to families and individuals.
