Helping students build math skills and increasing algebra passage rates
United Way MATH
United Way M.A.T.H. (Mastering Algebra Together Houston) is a partnership between United Way of Greater Houston and ConocoPhillips, aimed at improving Algebra I passage rates through increased hands-on experience with math, by making career connections and through peer-to-peer tutoring. United Way MATH trains eighth-graders on the academic bubble to become student leaders and tutors to sixth-graders who are also struggling in math.
120 students are participating at six schools.
During the last school year, math problem-solving skills for the majority of tutors and tutees increased from the pre- to the post-assessment.
United Way M.A.T.H. Camp provides much-needed math enrichment while helping to stem the learning loss many students experience while out of school.
900 students participated during the summer.
Participating middle school students showed skill gains of 43%, up from 24% in 2016.
Summer slide (the learning loss often experienced during the summer) was eliminated for nearly all students.
