Read Across America Volunteer FAQs

What activities will volunteers be completing with the students?

Volunteers will be reading a book selected by the school and leading an activity related to the book’s characters and messages. All materials and books will be provided by United Way!

How will volunteers know what to do once they arrive?

United Way staff and volunteer project leaders will welcome volunteers and help them sign in. Refreshments will be provided while the schedule and activities are explained. All volunteers will be trained on the event and will have access to United Way staff and project leaders throughout the entirety of the project.

Do volunteers need to complete any waivers or background checks?

All volunteers will complete a United Way waiver before the project. If the school in which a volunteer signed up for requires a background check, this will be communicated to the necessary volunteers via email 2 weeks before the event. This email will also include parking information, directions, and any necessary reminders.

What do volunteers wear?

Volunteers will be provided with a United Way volunteer shirt upon arrival. If you have a United Way volunteer shirt from a 2019 project, we invite you to wear it! Volunteers should wear comfortable pants and shoes, as some volunteers may choose to sit on the floor with the students while reading or completing activities
