Become a United Way Investment Volunteer

As United Way embarks on its second century of service, we need committed volunteers to engage in the review and decision-making process for our upcoming three-year funding cycle. Join us for opportunities starting in May 2021 and help ensure the sound investment of funds entrusted to us by generous donors.

How can I get involved?​

Volunteers can apply to participate in Phase 2 and Organizational Review at this time. All volunteer activities will be virtual through 2021. Volunteers will need regular access to a computer or tablet to participate in trainings, meetings, and to complete their volunteer work. 

Note: Employees or family members of applying organizations are not eligible to volunteer for the investment process.

Phase 2 - Regional Investment Evaluation
July – October 2021

Review agency's financial and governance submissions to assess compliance with United Way of Greater Houston’s Second Century Vision's standards and policies and make a risk assessment

Primarily independent work, flexible to your schedule

One virtual training session (two hours) with other volunteers and United Way staff

Collaborate with a group of volunteers to evaluate and recommend investments for services within a specific region   

This volunteer opportunity requires reviewing applications for funding, participating in virtual interviews with nonprofit applicants, and at least two additional virtual group meetings

Volunteers will have a mix of independent and collaborative work, including a set of pre-scheduled meetings

Volunteer requirements:

  • Financial background and ability to read and assess financial statements and governance documents
  • Ideal for individuals looking to volunteer on evenings and weekends as the work is independent and flexible
  • Attend volunteer training (August)
  • Complete an evaluation form online

Deadline to apply is July 30, 2021. 

Volunteer requirements:

  • Flexible schedule to participate in several scheduled meetings during the work day
  • Attend volunteer training (mid-summer)
  • Attend meetings and agency interviews
  • Not required to participate in Phase 1

*Volunteers who apply for and are accepted for Phase 2 will be placed into a Regional Investment Team by United Way staff and will be notified in July, prior to volunteer training.
